Not every staircase needs to be ripped out and rebuilt. If the underlying structure is sound — the stringers, the framing, the rough opening — a renovation replaces the parts you see without touching the parts you don’t.
Renovation makes sense when: the structure is solid but the treads are worn, the risers are damaged, the railing is outdated or the whole thing just looks tired. New hardwood treads, new risers, new balusters and a new handrail can transform the staircase without the cost and disruption of a full rebuild.
Replacement makes sense when: the structure itself is compromised, the stair opening needs to change or the design calls for something entirely different — open riser, curved or a different configuration.
Our sales rep will assess the structure during the site measure and tell you straight which option makes sense. If a renovation will do the job, we’ll say so. If it needs a full replacement, we’ll tell you that too.
Treads. The horizontal surface you walk on. We replace worn, damaged or carpeted treads with hardwood. Red oak, white oak, maple and other species. Stained and finished to complement the rest of the home.
Risers. The vertical face between each tread. We replace risers in complementing hardwood or painted finishes.
Balusters and spindles. The vertical supports between the handrail and the treads. We replace with wood, metal or a combination. Square profiles, turned profiles, steel spindles — whatever suits the design.
Handrails. The rail you hold when you walk up and down. We replace handrails in hardwood species to complement the treads or in a contrasting finish. We also replace newel posts and any transitions or trim.
Skirt boards and trim. The finishing details where the staircase meets the wall. We replace and refinish to complete the renovation.
Everything is manufactured in our Kingston facility. Nothing is off the shelf. We measure on-site and build to your dimensions.
A staircase renovation is disruptive. You’re working in a finished home, on a structure you use every day. Here’s what happens.
Access. Your staircase will be out of service during parts of the renovation. We plan the work to minimize the time you’re without access. Most residential staircase renovations take three to five days on-site, depending on the scope of the project.
Dust. Cutting and sanding creates dust. We use plastic barriers, support poles and sander vacuums to control it. We can’t eliminate it entirely — it’s a construction project in a finished home. But we do everything we can to contain it.
Staining and finishing. Stain and finish work is coordinated after the structural renovation is complete. Our stain contractor reaches out directly to schedule. The process adds time but it’s the final step that makes the renovation look finished.
Clean-up. When we leave, we clean up. The best outcome is when it looks like we were never there except for the finished staircase.
That’s what the showroom is for. See the wood species side by side. Compare baluster styles. Put your hand on the handrail. Walk up the stairs.
Most homeowners who come in thinking they need something elaborate end up choosing something simple. Clean lines. Square profiles. A classic look that doesn’t date. As one of our reps puts it: “Don’t overthink this. That’s a classic look. It’s been around.”
Stairs are the one trade that touches every other trade’s timeline. When we’re late, your flooring guys wait. Your painters wait. Your client calls you asking what’s going on.
We don’t do that. Our sales reps have 70+ years of combined install experience. They catch problems at the quote stage that others miss until install day. You get a schedule you can count on and an install that’s done clean.
A sales rep visits your home to assess the existing staircase and take measurements. No charge.

In most cases, yes. If the underlying structure is sound, we replace the treads, risers, balusters and handrail without tearing out the framing. Our sales rep assesses the structure during the site measure.
Most residential staircase renovations take one to three days on-site. Manufacturing happens in our shop before we arrive. Staining and finishing add time after the structural work is complete.
Yes. This is one of the most common renovation requests we get. We remove the carpet, assess the substructure and install hardwood treads, risers and any railing updates.
It depends on the scope — treads only, treads and risers, full railing replacement or all of the above. We quote after the site measure so the price reflects your actual staircase. Jobs range from a few hundred dollars for simple repairs to $20,000+ for a full renovation with custom railings.
