Open riser stairs have no vertical risers between the treads. You see through the staircase. Light passes through. The whole structure feels lighter and more open than a traditional closed design.
Open riser systems use steel stringers or mono stringers with hardwood or engineered treads. The look is modern and clean. They pair well with glass or metal railing systems.
Open riser designs need to meet Ontario building code for tread depth, nosing and the gap between treads. The gap can’t exceed 100 mm. Our sales reps confirm code compliance at the design stage so there are no surprises at inspection.
Open riser staircases cost more than standard closed designs. The engineering is more involved. The tolerances are tighter. But the result is a staircase that opens up the room instead of closing it off.
A curved staircase is the centrepiece of a home. It’s also the most technically demanding stair design we build. Every component is custom — the stringers, the treads, the railing. Nothing is off the shelf.
We build curved stair systems in our Kingston facility using CNC-cut components. The precision matters. A curved staircase that’s even slightly off will show it in the railing, the tread spacing and the overall flow. That’s why we manufacture everything in-house where we can control the tolerances.
Curved staircases take longer to design, build and install than straight or L-shaped stairs. The cost is higher. But for a custom home where the staircase is the first thing you see when you walk in, nothing else makes the same statement.
If you’re considering a curved staircase, come to our showroom. See the wood species options. Talk through the design with one of our sales reps. They’ve built enough of these to know what works in your space and what doesn’t.
Closed riser stairs are the most common stair design we build. Solid risers between each tread. Clean, traditional, built to last. This is what most new builds and renovations call for.
We build closed riser systems in red oak, maple and other hardwood species.. The species you choose affects the colour, grain pattern and how it takes stain. Our showroom has samples side by side so you can see the difference in person.
Straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, winder — whatever the stair opening requires, we build it. Every system is manufactured to the measurements we take on-site. No stock sizes. No shimming a prefab into a custom opening.
That’s what the showroom is for. Walk up a finished staircase. See the wood species. Compare open riser to closed. Our showroom team can walk you through the basics and help you start narrowing things down.
For a deeper conversation about your space, budget and build schedule, we’ll set you up with one of our sales reps, they’ve been building stairs for decades. Sometimes the answer is simpler than you think. As one of them puts it: “Don’t overthink this. That’s a classic look. It’s been around.”

Stairs are the one trade that touches every other trade’s timeline. When we’re late, your flooring guys wait. Your painters wait. Your client calls you asking what’s going on.
We don’t do that. Our sales reps have 70+ years of combined install experience. They catch problems at the quote stage that others miss until install day. You get a schedule you can count on and an install that’s done clean.
A sales rep visits your home or job site to take measurements. No charge.
Visit our showroom. See wood species, stair designs and railing styles in person. We provide a design sketch and a detailed quote.
Everything manufactured in our 20,000 sq ft Kingston facility before we arrive at your site.
Our crews arrive on schedule, handle the full installation, and leave your space clean, tidy, and ready to enjoy.
We service Eastern Ontario from our Kingston facility. Our sales reps measure on-site at your location.
Closed riser stairs have solid vertical boards between each tread. Open riser stairs don’t — you see through the staircase. Open riser is a modern look. Closed riser is traditional. Both meet Ontario building code when designed correctly.
Yes. The gap between treads can’t exceed 100 mm. Tread depth and nosing requirements also apply. Our sales reps confirm code compliance at the design stage before manufacturing.
Most custom stair projects are completed in about 4 weeks from measure to install, depending on the design and site conditions. More complex staircases, such as curved designs, can take longer. Most on-site installations take 3 to 5 days.
In many cases, yes. We assess the existing framing during the site measure. If the structure is sound, we can replace treads, risers, balusters and handrails without a full teardown. See our staircase renovation page for more.
