TFP was founded in Kingston, Ontario in 1987 by Wayne Cole and his family. From the beginning, the focus has been straightforward: quality work, professional service, and doing what you say you’ll do.
Over the years, TFP grew into a full-scale operation capable of supporting production runs as well as one-of-a-kind custom staircases. The shop uses CNC machinery and specialised equipment to deliver consistent results—whether the project is part of a larger build or a single custom home.

TFP is currently led by Steven (CEO) and Ashley (CFO). They were drawn to the opportunity to carry forward a long-standing, family-owned business, and under their leadership the company is transitioning from a legacy manufacturing-volume model toward a high-service, quality-led brand without losing the craftsmanship that built TFP’s reputation.
The commitment is the same today as it’s always been: show up, communicate clearly, do the work properly, and when something isn’t right, make it right. TFP moves forward in good faith, does its level best, and lets the work speak for itself.

As our work evolved, so did the need for more specialized solutions. Oakwood Closets was created as a dedicated division of TFP Stairs & Railings, focused on custom storage and cabinetry.
It’s the same team, the same shop, and the same approach — just applied to a different part of the home. Every Oakwood project is designed, built, and installed in-house, with the same attention to detail and accountability our clients expect.
Our facility on Resource Road in Kingston houses everything: CNC machines, the workshop floor, material storage, and the showroom. Your stairs are designed, manufactured and quality-checked in the same building. Nothing gets shipped across the province. Nothing gets outsourced to a third party.
When our install crew shows up at your house, they built what they’re installing. If something needs adjusting on-site, they know how — because they made it.
We keep the shop clean. Everything has its place. You should care about your space, your tools, and the product you’re making. It’s a reflection of how we operate.
Pictures help. But there’s no substitute for putting your hand on a railing and walking up a set of stairs. Our showroom has full-scale stair displays, railing samples in every material we offer, wood species options, and hardware selections.
Most people can’t picture what their project will look like from a photo. That’s normal. Come in, see it in person, and walk out knowing exactly what you’re getting.
We don’t do pressure. Nobody’s going to follow you around trying to upsell you. Come in, take your time, ask questions. That’s what the showroom is for.

If we say Thursday, we’re there Thursday. Contractors schedule their other trades around us. We don’t blow up their timeline.
Our reps read the room. If what you’ve picked works for your house and your budget, that’s what we quote. We’d rather make a customer and get the referral than chase one big sale.
Wood is a live product. It shifts. When something comes up after install, we come back and deal with it. No argument, no runaround. The longer a customer waits to hear from us, the worse it gets. So we don’t make them wait.
Sometimes the answer is “don’t spend the extra money.” Dave tells homeowners that all the time. If a classic style will look right for the next 20 years, he says so — even when a fancier option costs more.
We’re not the cheapest. We know what our work costs to produce, and we price it honestly. We’ve lost jobs over it, and that’s fine. We’d rather do it right than do it cheap.
Dust control, plastic barriers, sander vacuums. We’re working in your home — we treat it like our own. The best outcome is when a contractor’s client doesn’t even know we were there.
Stairs are the one trade that touches every other trade’s timeline. When we’re late, your flooring guys wait. Your painters wait. Your client calls you asking what’s going on.
We don’t do that. Our sales reps have 70+ years of combined install experience. They coordinate directly with your site schedule and catch problems before install day.
Ben installed railings for over two decades before moving to sales. When he walks into your house, he’s looking at the railing the way an installer would — how to make it clean, simple and right for your space. He won’t upsell you. He’ll steer you toward what makes sense for your home and your budget.
Ben’s the one who started a job on one house and ended up doing half the street. Word of mouth works when the work is good.
Ian started on the shop floor running the CNC machine, then moved into programming, design and ordering before taking on sales. He understands what fits and what works because he’s been making it for nearly two decades.
For contractors, Ian is the rep who tells you Tuesday and is there Tuesday. If one thing you don’t have to stress about on a build, it’s the stairs.
Dave ran a custom renovation company for 27 years before joining TFP. Carpentry, custom kitchens, custom baths — work that blends trade skill with an artistic eye. That’s exactly what stairs and railings require.
Dave’s the one who’ll drive by your site and call your contractor to say “looks like you’re about four weeks out — you need me there?” He doesn’t wait to be asked.
Hillary helps keep projects moving behind the scenes and is also the go-to person for Oakwood closet design. From coordinating details in the office to helping clients plan closet layouts that actually work for how they live, she brings organisation and product knowledge to every step of the process.
For homeowners, that means clearer communication and a smoother experience. For closet projects, it means working with someone who understands both the design side and the day-to-day practical details.
Amanda is often one of the first people clients speak with when they contact TFP. She helps keep the office side of every project organised, supports communication between the team and the customer, and makes sure the details don’t get missed.
She’s part of what keeps the process running smoothly from first call to final paperwork — the kind of behind-the-scenes role that makes the whole experience feel easier for the customer.
